What's Inside
This resource includes a four-page worksheet with 16 data analysis problems. Each problem requires students to find the median, mode, and range for a set of numbers. A complete, page-by-page answer key is provided for easy grading and self-checking. The layout is clean and straightforward.
A Progression to Mastery
The worksheet uses repetition across 16 problems to build student fluency. This allows for a gradual progression from initial learning to confident application.
- Guided Practice: Teachers can model the first few problems, demonstrating the process for finding median, mode, and range.
- Supported Practice: Students can then work in pairs on the first page to solidify their understanding of the three distinct measures.
- Independent Practice: The final 12 problems serve as an ideal independent task for classwork or homework, allowing students to show what they know.
This structure supports a gradual-release model, moving students from observation to independent application.
Standards Alignment
This worksheet directly supports skills in the Common Core State Standards. The primary alignment is CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.SP.B.5.C, which requires summarizing data sets using measures of center (median) and variability (range). While a Grade 6 standard, this sheet provides crucial foundational practice for Grade 5 students. The standard code can be copied into lesson plans or curriculum maps.
How to Use It
This is a versatile tool for the math classroom. Use it as a follow-up after a direct instruction lesson to give students immediate practice, which can be completed in 20-30 minutes. For formative assessment, observe students as they work to identify common errors, like forgetting to order the data set first. It can also be assigned as homework.
Who It's For
Designed for Grade 5 students learning measures of central tendency, this worksheet's clear format is accessible to all learners. It pairs well with an anchor chart that defines median, mode, and range. For students needing support, allow the use of a calculator to help with ordering numbers and subtraction.
This worksheet provides practice on calculating median, mode, and range, aligning with skills outlined in CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.SP.B.5.C. Understanding measures of center and variability is a critical component of statistical literacy. Research has consistently shown that procedural fluency is a necessary precursor to conceptual understanding in mathematics. According to the RAND AIRS 2024 report on instructional materials, repeated practice with targeted skills is a key feature of effective math interventions. By mastering these calculations, students are better prepared to analyze data distributions and make sense of statistical summaries, a skill essential for navigating a data-rich world. The 16 problems provide the necessary repetition for students to internalize the distinct process for each measure.
